SSA File

Files with the SSA extension contain subtitles for movies and various video materials, which can be created in Sub Station Alpha software and many other free applications. This is a specially developed text format created by CS Low AKA Kotus. It enables the generation of more advanced subtitles than the standard SRT subtitles, although it is not widely used in professional applications.

Files with the .SSA extension - what possibilities do they offer?

The capabilities of SSA files are based on the use of scripts. They are divided into sections in the style of INI files. These include:

• the file itself (metadata) in the description section,
• text styles - styles,
• events - objects to display - events.

In addition to the actual content of the subtitles, files can contain information about text formatting, animation, text movement, graphic elements, or karaoke mode. The Advanced Sub Station Alpha format, saved in files with the ASS extension, provides more advanced features. The SSA extension is used for version 4 and lower of the format, while ASS is for newer versions.

Application of subtitles in SSA format

SSA files are widely used by anime fans and individuals specializing in editing other films. They work well for overlaying text on video, so-called hardsubbing, or for including them in a multimedia data container file - softsubbing, for example, in MKV Matroska files. Thanks to appropriate converters, it is possible to change the subtitle format from SSA to another, more common format. However, this is often associated with the loss of additional subtitle properties.
