AQQ Instant Messenger File
Ask a question
QUICK ANSWER

An AQQ file is an application data file created by the AQQ messenger (Komunikator AQQ), a Polish multi-protocol instant messaging client for Windows. The only program that understands it is AQQ itself. There is no general-purpose viewer or converter - if you no longer use AQQ, the file has no practical use outside its original installation.

What is the AQQ file format?

.aqq is a proprietary data file created by the AQQ instant messenger (Komunikator AQQ), a Windows-based multi-protocol IM client developed in Poland by WapSter and later Creative Team S.A. The application appeared around 2004 and supported popular Polish and international messaging protocols, including Gadu-Gadu, Tlen, and Jabber/XMPP.

The .aqq extension identifies internal application data files generated and read exclusively by the AQQ client. These files are stored in binary format and typically occupy only a few kilobytes. Their exact on-disk structure is proprietary and has never been publicly documented, so the files cannot be meaningfully opened outside of AQQ itself.

No public MIME type is registered for .aqq; operating systems default to application/octet-stream when handling these files. There is also no known file signature (magic bytes) that would allow third-party tools to identify them reliably.

AQQ was actively developed through the early-to-mid 2010s. After development ceased, the application and its file formats became effectively legacy artifacts. No open-source or cross-platform alternative reads .aqq files, and no documented migration path exists for the data they contain. Windows is the only operating system on which the format was ever used.

Security & safety

RISK: MEDIUM

The file itself is application data and is not known to be executable, so the .aqq is not an obvious threat. The real cautions are around the application: AQQ is an old, no-longer-actively- developed Windows messenger, so downloading installers from unofficial 'download portals' risks bundled adware/PUPs - only get it from the official site (aqq.eu) if you must. As with any old IM client, an unmaintained app may carry unpatched vulnerabilities; weigh whether recovering the file's data is worth running legacy software.

Frequently asked questions

What is an .aqq file?
It's a data file used by the AQQ messenger (Komunikator AQQ), a Polish multi-protocol instant-messaging client for Windows. It's proprietary application data, not a standalone document.
How do I open an .aqq file?
Only the AQQ messenger reliably understands its own .aqq files. The format is undocumented, so there's no general viewer or converter - install AQQ (from aqq.eu) if you genuinely need the data.
What program is AQQ?
AQQ (Komunikator AQQ) is a Polish Windows instant messenger by WapSter/Creative Team that connected to networks like Gadu-Gadu, Tlen and Jabber/XMPP. It is no longer actively developed.
Can I convert an .aqq file to text or another format?
No reliable converter exists - the format is proprietary and undocumented. Any data extraction has to happen inside the AQQ application itself.
Can I just delete an .aqq file?
If you no longer use the AQQ messenger, the file is only meaningful to that app and is generally safe to remove. Back it up first if you might want to restore AQQ data later.
