What to expect
- The output is a template focused on design (masters, layouts, theme), not a slide-by-slide copy of the deck's content.
- Newer PowerPoint features that have no equivalent in the 97-2003 binary format may be downgraded or removed during conversion.
- Rendering through a different engine can shift fonts, spacing, or effects slightly compared with the original PPTX.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the PPTX and the resulting POT?
PPTX is a full presentation; POT is a legacy PowerPoint 97-2003 template that stores design elements such as the slide master, theme, and layouts. Converting produces a reusable starting point rather than a finished deck. Why convert a PPTX into a POT template?
A template lets you spin up new presentations that all share the same look. Saving a designed PPTX as
POT turns that design into something people on older Office versions can base new decks on.What opens a POT file?
POT opens in Microsoft PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, and Google Slides. Double-clicking it typically creates a new presentation from the template, while File > Open lets you edit the template itself. Is anything lost going from PPTX to the older POT format?
POT uses the older binary OLE2 format, so modern Office Open XML features in the PPTX - newer chart types, some effects, or advanced formatting - may be simplified or dropped to fit the legacy structure. Core layout and theme elements carry over.
