Frequently asked questions
How is a PPS different from the original PPTX?
PPS is a PowerPoint 97-2003 slide show: the same content set to open straight into full-screen playback instead of the editor. Converting a PPTX to PPS changes both the format (to the older binary layout) and the default open behavior. Why convert PPTX to PPS?
A slide show is handy for sharing a deck that should play immediately rather than open in edit mode, and the 97-2003 format is readable by very old PowerPoint versions. It is a presentation-for-viewing rather than for editing.
Can the PPS still be edited?
It can, but not by default - double-clicking launches playback. To edit it you open it inside PowerPoint (or LibreOffice Impress) and use Save As. The content is intact; only the launch behavior differs.
Is quality lost moving from PPTX to the older PPS format?
PPS uses the legacy OLE2 binary format, so modern Office Open XML features in the PPTX may be simplified or dropped to fit it, while core slides, text, and images carry over. Layout can also shift slightly when re-rendered.
