Files with the .DWG extension contain 2D or 3D images and their metadata, stored in a proprietary format using a binary method. The extension’s name originates from the English word for a DraWinG. It is a native format for several CAD applications. Its first implementation was created in the end of 80s, for the Interact CAD software, and later it was acquired and licensed by Autodesk in 1982, as the foundation of the AutoCAD. Until 2018, there were over 20 versions of the file format used by the AutoCAD series software.
Other DWG files are stored also with extensions:
Numerous open implementation libraries are being created, but none of them has reached a 100% compatibility with the proprietary format. This format, besides the native programs utilising it, is also supported within many other programs for computer assisted designing, and also it can be displayed within DWG viewers available online. The Autodesk company, creator of the CAD software, for many years has fought a losing battle with SolidWorks, demanding to register the DWG shortcut as a trademark.
When you install one of the applications from the list of programs that you found here, you should be able to open or edit the file with the DWG extension without any issue. However, if you still have problems with this, you may use the option of DWG file conversion to a different format.
We hope we helped you solve the problem with the DWG file. If you do not know where you can download the application from our list, click on the link (which is the name of the program) - you will find more information there on the location where to download the secure setup version of the required application.
There can be more reasons which determine that you are not able to open the DWG file (apart from the lack of the proper application installed).
First - the DWG file may be incorrectly associated with the application installed to support it. In this case, you need to change this association by yourself. To do this, right-click on the DWG file that you want to edit, click "Open with" and then select the program from the list that you have installed. After this operation, the problems with opening the DWG file should be solved.
Second - the file you want to open can simply be damaged. Then, the best solution is to find a new version of given file, or download it again from the same source as before (maybe for some reason in the previous session the download of the DWG file has not been completed and it cannot be opened properly).
If you have additional information about the DWG file, we will be grateful if you share it with our users. To do this, use the form here and send us your information on DWG file.
