What is the PPTX file format?
.pptx files are created in the Open XML format and contain the data of a multimedia presentation, produced typically with Microsoft PowerPoint. In the Office Open XML standard, data is not stored in a single binary file but in a collection of separate files compressed into a ZIP archive package. The contents of a .pptx package include:
- slide content and slideshows
- text descriptions and speaker notes for each slide
- formatting and layout definitions
- drawings and vector shapes
- embedded images
- animations and other multimedia data
.pptx files are characterised by high availability of their contained data. Embedded images are stored as individual files inside the package (commonly .png or .jpeg), and slide content is held in XML-based parts - meaning individual components can be inspected or extracted without specialised software. The format replaced the legacy binary .ppt format (which used the OLE2 container and starts with a D0 CF 11 E0 signature) when PowerPoint 2007 introduced it. A .pptx file shares the same PK magic bytes (50 4B 03 04) as any ZIP archive and can be unpacked with tools like 7-Zip to access its internal files directly.
.pptx is a popular and quite universal format, supported by many programs designed for creating and viewing multimedia presentations. The most popular ones include Microsoft PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, and WPS Office Presentation. A macro-enabled variant, .pptm, follows the same package structure but additionally stores VBA macros. If you need to access only specific component files - for instance, only the text notes - treat the file the same as a standard ZIP archive and unpack it using tools like 7-Zip.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWPlain PPTX cannot run macros, so a normal presentation is essentially a safe container of slides, images and media. The real risks are (1) macro-enabled .pptm files (or files renamed to look like .pptx) that can carry VBA malware - never click 'Enable Content' on a deck you didn't expect; and (2) embedded/linked objects and external links. Modern PowerPoint opens files from email/the internet in Protected View. Opening an unknown PPTX in Google Slides or LibreOffice is generally safe because the slides render without executing PowerPoint VBA.
