What to expect

  • PPTX and PPSX are the same ZIP-based Office Open XML package; only an internal launch-mode flag differs, so the file size is virtually unchanged.
  • A PPSX does not prevent editing - anyone with PowerPoint or LibreOffice can still open it in the editor and modify slides.
  • If the deck uses complex PowerPoint-specific animations or SmartArt, LibreOffice may not reproduce them with full fidelity; use PowerPoint itself for exact results.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert PPTX to PPSX without Microsoft PowerPoint?
Yes - LibreOffice Impress is free and handles the conversion on Windows, macOS, and Linux with no loss of content.
Does PPSX lock the presentation so others cannot edit it?
No. Anyone with PowerPoint or LibreOffice can open a .ppsx in edit mode; for real protection, export to PDF instead.
Is a PPSX file larger than the original PPTX?
No - the size difference is just a few bytes because the slide content is identical.
Can I convert PPSX back to PPTX?
Yes, using the same Save As method in PowerPoint or LibreOffice Impress - just choose PowerPoint Presentation (.pptx) as the target format.
