MDX File Extension

Extended Media Descriptor Format

What is MDX file?

An MDX file (Extended Media Descriptor also known as Media Data eXtended) is a disc image typically generated by the Daemon Tools program. The file contains disc data and volume formatting. MDX files can serve as virtual drives in order to emulate the original discs.

Differences between MDX, MDF and MDS files

The MDX format was developed as a new, better version of the MDF and MDS formats. The difference is that in a single MDX file, there is a complete set of data of a disc image, while in the older versions data had to be divided into two files – MDF and MDS. MDF and MDS always had to occur together, if not, it was impossible to read the image.

MDX files can be freely converted into ISO and also the reversed process is possible.
