What is the DWFX file format?
.dwfx is a drawing file (2D or 3D) developed by Autodesk. .dwfx files store project data such as 2D and 3D drawings, metadata, and object properties. The format was developed by Autodesk as a way to combine DWF design content with an open, widely supported packaging standard.
.dwfx files are chiefly used for sharing CAD project data. Users can open a .dwfx file and view the stored project or print it without needing a full CAD installation.
.dwfx is closely related to the .dwf format - it is the XPS-based successor to it, introduced in 2007. Rather than using the older proprietary DWF binary container, .dwfx packages design content using Microsoft's XML Paper Specification (XPS) and the underlying Open Packaging Conventions (OPC). Structurally, the file is a ZIP archive that begins with the PK magic-byte header, and contains FixedPage XPS markup alongside the DWF geometry payload and metadata. Because of this, .dwfx files can be opened directly in the Microsoft XPS Viewer built into Windows Vista and later - no CAD software required.
XPS was developed by Microsoft; Autodesk adopted it for .dwfx to integrate DWF technology with Windows systems and simplify distributing CAD drawings to non-engineering audiences.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA DWFx is a published, view-only design package (XPS/ZIP) with no macro or script execution, so opening one to review is low risk. It can, however, embed object properties and metadata from the source model, so a published file may inadvertently carry more design detail than the author intends - a confidentiality consideration, not a malware one. As with any download, get DWFx files from people you trust; since it's a ZIP/XPS package, the usual archive caution applies.
