An .abr file contains a set of digital brushes that can be used in Adobe Photoshop and other compatible painting applications. The file stores information describing each brush, including:
- Brush shape and tip geometry,
- Texture used by each brush,
- Shape dynamics and scattering settings.
Each brush is defined separately, and a single .abr file may contain multiple brush styles. Brushes can be loaded in Photoshop from the Brushes panel, or by double-clicking the .abr file. The selected brush can be customized by adjusting its parameters, such as:
- Size,
- Color,
- Flow / opacity.
The format exists in two binary variants: a legacy form and a newer v6+ form. The v6+ variant carries the Photoshop resource signature 8BIM at byte offset 4, followed by tagged blocks (samp for sampled brushes, patt for patterns, desc for descriptors). The older form is partly covered by the PSD file format specification.
Users can make their own brushes or edit existing ones in Photoshop by painting a brush tip shape and choosing Edit → Define Brush Preset. Brushes can be previewed with free third-party viewer tools without a Photoshop licence. Applications including GIMP, Krita, and CLIP STUDIO PAINT can also import .abr files with varying fidelity.
Adobe Creative Cloud Libraries allow users to share and sync custom brush presets across devices. Building a custom library from downloaded packs - alongside related presets like .ASL layer styles or .GRD gradients - is a common workflow.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWABR brush presets are inert data (brush bitmaps and parameters) with no executable code, so installing one is low-risk. The real-world caution is the download source: many "free Photoshop brushes" sites push adware-laden downloaders or bundle junk - get brush packs from reputable sources (Adobe, Brusheezy, established artists) and the editors from official sites (adobe.com, gimp.org, krita.org). Also watch licensing: some "free" brush packs restrict commercial use.

in a nutshell- Gerber Aperture / RS-274D file - Older PCB CAD systems used .abr for Gerber aperture (D-code) definitions - unrelated to image brushes.
- Audiograbber / various app data - A few legacy applications reuse .abr for their own settings/data; not brush presets.
