What is the AX file format?
An .ax file is a Windows DirectShow filter - a COM in-process plugin used by media players and video applications to read, decode, process or render audio and video streams. Despite sometimes being described as a video file format, .ax files are not media containers: they are Windows PE DLLs with a binary structure identical to .DLL files, renamed by convention.
.ax files store DirectShow filters commonly used for video playback and editing. DirectShow was codenamed "Quartz" during development, and many developers still refer to it by that name. The framework decodes source streams - for example .avi, .mkv or .mp4 files - for media players and other applications.
Filters used by DirectShow fall into three functional types:
- source filters (responsible for reading source streams from files, network or devices)
- transform filters (responsible for decoding, encoding or processing the data stream)
- renderer filters (responsible for sending output to a display, speakers or a file)
An .ax filter is registered into Windows using regsvr32 filter.ax and removed with regsvr32 /u filter.ax. Common system-supplied examples include quartz.ax (the base DirectShow renderer) and qdvd.ax (DVD Navigator). Third-party codec packs such as LAV Filters also install .ax files. Microsoft's Media Foundation framework (introduced in Windows Vista) is the modern successor for new codec development, but DirectShow and .ax filters continue to be supported on Windows 11 for legacy compatibility.
Security & safety
RISK: MEDIUM.ax files are executable code loaded into the address space of media player processes. A malicious .ax file (once registered) could hijack any application that plays media via DirectShow. Unverified codec packs distributing .ax files are a known malware vector - stick to codec packs from known sources (LAV Filters from GitHub, ffdshow-tryouts). Check the Authenticode digital signature before registering unknown .ax files. The extension itself is not dangerous if unregistered.
