Frequently asked questions
Why would I convert EPUB to LRF?
LRF is the Sony BBeB format used by the old Sony Reader (PRS) line, so the reason to convert is to read an EPUB on that legacy Sony hardware. For any current device, EPUB itself is the more useful format.
How good is the text fidelity of the result?
The reflowable text of the book transfers, since both formats are designed for e-readers that reflow content. However, LRF supports far less styling than modern EPUB, so complex CSS layouts are simplified or dropped.
What devices open an LRF file?
LRF was made for Sony Reader (PRS) devices and can also be opened in Calibre's built-in viewer. It is an obsolete, discontinued format with little support outside those.
What EPUB features do not survive the conversion?
EPUB 3 additions such as embedded JavaScript, audio/video and advanced CSS have no equivalent in the older LRF format and are lost. Fine typographic control and complex layout are also reduced to what BBeB can represent.
