What is the RPT file format?
The Crystal Reports application - developed originally by Crystal Services and now maintained by SAP - stores report definitions in the .rpt format. Designed for managing and reporting business data, it enables users to save report layouts, data-source connections, formulas, and optionally a snapshot of queried data.
A single .rpt file may contain many sources of the project's database, including SQL databases and flat files such as CSV. It may also comprise sorted or grouped fragments of data; the format provides rich functionality to sort and group that data.
Internally, .rpt files are proprietary binary documents structured as OLE/compound documents. Tools detect them by scanning for embedded "Crystal Reports" strings rather than a fixed magic-byte signature.
The .rpt format runs on Microsoft Windows. Mac users can run Crystal Reports through a Windows virtual machine. Reports can be exported to PDF, XLS, and other common formats.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA Crystal Reports .rpt is data, not an executable. The realistic risks: it can embed a live datasource connection (sometimes with credentials) and possibly saved query results, so a report file may carry sensitive business data - treat it as confidential. Beware web "free RPT viewer" downloads that bundle adware/PUP; prefer SAP's own free viewer.
Format details
in a nutshell- Plain-Text Report / Log - Many programs save human-readable output (diagnostic logs, build/scan reports, summaries) as '.rpt'; these are just ASCII/UTF-8 text and open in any editor.
- OrCAD / EDA Report - Cadence OrCAD PCB Designer and other EDA tools emit .rpt netlist/DRC/BOM reports, usually plain text.
