How to convert DWG to STP
- Add your .DWG file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .STP in a few seconds.
- Download your new .STP file.
What to expect
- 3D solids transfer as B-rep CAD geometry, not a mesh, but AutoCAD layers, blocks and annotations are dropped.
- Only true solid bodies convert cleanly; a 2D drawing produces little or nothing useful.
- Any AutoLISP/VBA automation in the DWG is left behind.
Frequently asked questions
Is DWG to STP a faithful conversion?
For 3D solids, yes. STEP (STP) stores boundary-representation solid geometry, so a 3D DWG solid transfers as an editable CAD body rather than a mesh. It is the most faithful neutral format for solid parts.
Why convert DWG to STP?
STEP (ISO 10303) is the standard for moving parts and assemblies between CAD programs, while DWG is AutoCAD-specific. Converting lets other CAD tools open and edit the geometry.
Where does an STP file open?
It opens free in FreeCAD, CAD Assistant, or the Autodesk Viewer online. For 3D printing, convert STP to STL first.
What does a 2D DWG produce?
A 2D-only DWG has no solid body to export, so results will be sparse. AutoCAD layers, blocks, dimensions and text are not carried into STEP.
