How to convert DWG to STL
- Add your .DWG file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .STL in a few seconds.
- Download your new .STL file.
What to expect
- Most DWG files are 2D drawings - no converter can produce a valid STL without 3D solid geometry in the source file; the geometry must be modeled first.
- Curved surfaces are approximated as triangles; in AutoCAD raise
FACETRESabove the default of 0.5 before runningSTLOUTto get smoother results on cylinders and arcs. - STL carries no unit information - set your slicer to the same unit (mm or inches) as the original drawing or the model will be scaled incorrectly.
Frequently asked questions
My DWG is a floor plan - can I convert it to STL for 3D printing?
Not directly. A floor plan is 2D line work with no solid geometry. You need to extrude walls to a height in a 3D application (AutoCAD, Fusion, or SketchUp) before exporting to STL.
AutoCAD says "no solids selected" when I run STLOUT - why?
The file contains 2D entities or surface objects rather than ACIS solid bodies. Run the
LIST command on a selected object to check its type - STLOUT only works on 3D solids. Is Autodesk Fusion really free?
Fusion offers a free personal/hobby tier that includes STL export; commercial use requires a paid subscription. Check Autodesk's current licensing page as the terms have changed over time.
The exported STL mesh is broken or unprintable - what should I do?
Non-manifold geometry (open faces, zero-thickness walls, self-intersections) produces invalid meshes. Run a repair in Meshmixer (Analysis > Inspector > Auto Repair All) or use PrusaSlicer's built-in repair tool before sending to the printer.
