CTF File

The control file for updating AVG software is saved with the .CTF extension. It contains information about the antivirus updates being conducted. If an update fails or encounters an error, the application displays an appropriate message. The control file ensures that a complete set of data - virus database or software has been correctly downloaded and installed. These files were used in application version 8. Currently, the software may use a different file structure.

Usage of CTF Files in AVG Software

AVG Technologies antivirus application allows for automatic updates - downloading the latest version of data necessary for diagnosing computer problems, detecting viruses, and malicious software. Automatic update is based on:

• checking the version of the database owned,
• connecting to the server and verifying the version of the central database,
• in case of discrepancy, downloading the latest version from the server.

This is made possible by the functionality of AVG's Auto Update utilizing the .CTF files.

Troubleshooting CTF Files in AVG Antivirus

In some versions of AVG antivirus, users report problems with the .CTF files. The software signals an error message about an improper CTF file with each update attempt. In such cases, manually removing it may help. By default, the files are named avginfoavi.ctf or avginfowin.ctf and are located in the AVG application data directory, under the updatedownload subdirectory.
