What is the XCP file format?
An .xcp file is an XLNT Command Procedure - a plain-text script written for XLNT (Extended Language for Windows NT), a command shell and scripting language for Windows developed by Advanced Systems Concepts, Inc. (ASCI). XLNT's syntax was deliberately modeled after DEC VMS DCL (Digital Command Language), making it familiar to system administrators migrating from VAX/VMS environments.
In an .xcp script, each executable command line is prefixed with a $ (dollar sign), following DCL convention. The language supports variables, conditional logic (IF/THEN/ELSE), loops (DO/END), and subroutines. Built-in commands provide direct native access to Windows subsystems - Active Directory, the registry, the file system, Windows services, and remote machines - without requiring the COM or WMI boilerplate typical of PowerShell scripts.
XLNT resolves procedure names automatically: invoking a procedure without a file extension causes XLNT to append .xcp and locate the matching file. ASCI also produces ActiveBatch, an enterprise job scheduling platform; XLNT functions as its scripting component.
XLNT was introduced in the early 1990s for Windows NT and is currently at version 5. Despite PowerShell's prevalence for modern Windows automation, ASCI continues to maintain and sell XLNT as of 2026, serving enterprises with large existing XLNT-based automation libraries. .xcp files can be opened and edited in any plain-text editor.
