What is the SIB file format?
Files with the .sib extension are created by the Sibelius application. .sib files contain a sheet music document - the full notation score, not recorded audio. Music notation can be entered using MIDI devices or other software tools. Sibelius is a professional music notation application that lets users play back scores, print sheet music, and publish created music scores online.

Sibelius has been actively developed since the late 1980s. The first version was written in assembly language for the RISC Acorn operating system and released in 1993. Those early Acorn releases were distributed on floppy disks and, because they were written in assembly, were notably fast and offered cutting-edge features including a full GUI with mouse support. Sibelius was acquired by Avid Technology in 2006, and development has continued under Avid with regular annual releases.
Modern versions of Sibelius are praised for their functionality, ease of use, and swift performance. The application won two best-software awards, one in 2005 and another in 2006.
Exporting .sib files
.sib files can be exported to several formats for sharing and interoperability. The most widely supported exchange format is MusicXML, which allows scores to be opened in other notation editors such as MuseScore or Finale. For playback data, Sibelius can export a MIDI file, and for fixed-layout distribution a PDF is commonly used. Sibelius can also export audio for listening purposes, though no audio data is stored inside the .sib file itself.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .sib is passive notation data with low risk; it is not executable. The realistic issues are compatibility (a file saved in a newer Sibelius may not open in an old one) and the absence of a good free native opener. Avoid dubious 'SIB file viewer/converter' downloads found via search - many are adware; the dependable path is Sibelius itself or asking the sender for a MusicXML/PDF export.
