What is the CDR file format?
Files with the .cdr extension contain vector graphics stored in a proprietary format of the CorelDRAW graphic program. CorelDRAW is designed for creating and editing 2D images, such as brochures, posters and logotypes. The internal format has changed along with software versions: since CorelDRAW 3 (1993) the RIFF container was adopted for the .cdr structure, while CorelDRAW X4 (version 14, 2008) switched the packaging to a ZIP-based archive - so modern .cdr files behave like a ZIP archive and contain XML, RIFF chunk files and binary .dat data files inside.
A .cdr drawing may contain:

Due to the fact that the .cdr format is not very mobile, it is advised to export graphic projects into popular formats such as PDF or SVG. .cdr files can be stored also as .cdt templates, so that their elements can be used again. The range of possibilities of a .cdr file is similar to the Adobe Illustrator .ai format. Although the format is proprietary, reverse engineering of the format led to the creation of the libcdr library, which enables reading of .cdr files produced by CorelDRAW from version 6 through X8 and later. There are also converters and programs enabling conversion of .cdr files into other graphic formats.

RISK: MEDIUMThe CDR file format is data, not executable. The real hazard with this extension is the download ecosystem around it: searches for free 'CDR viewer' / 'CDR opener' lead to many untrustworthy sites that bundle adware, PUPs or outright malware with the installer. Stick to reputable software (CorelDRAW, Inkscape from inkscape.org, LibreOffice from libreoffice.org) or a well-known online converter, and avoid no-name 'CDR Viewer' executables. Newer ZIP-based CDR files are archives, so in principle they could carry embedded content, but the practical risk is the downloaded 'viewer', not the artwork.
