What is the AI file format?
The .ai file format is the native format of Adobe Illustrator and is used for representation of vector-based single-page drawings, available in either PDF-compatible or EPS-compatible form. .ai is an abbreviation for Adobe Illustrator, and the format was formerly known as PGF.
The earlier versions of .ai files were EPS files with a compact, restricted PostScript syntax and additional semantics represented by Illustrator-specific DSC comments conforming to the document structuring convention used by DSC.
Starting with Illustrator 9 (2000), Adobe switched to a PDF-based container. When the "PDF Compatible File" option is enabled on save, the file begins with a %PDF header and can be opened by any PDF viewer. The proprietary Illustrator data is stored as a private stream within the PDF wrapper, inaccessible to non-Illustrator applications.
For broader compatibility, .ai artwork is often exported to SVG.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWAI files are graphics data and low-risk. Because modern .ai files are PDFs, the usual PDF caveats apply (a malformed file could target a viewer bug) - keep Acrobat/your reader updated. The bigger practical issue is fidelity, not safety: free tools may not reproduce every Illustrator effect exactly. Files from untrusted sources should be opened in an updated viewer.
