Why convert AI to PDF?
PDF is the standard format for sharing print-ready artwork with people who do not own Illustrator. It preserves vector quality, fonts, and colors at any size and opens on every OS without additional software.
How to convert AI to PDF
Adobe Illustrator APP
Go to File > Save As, choose Adobe PDF (.pdf), select a preset (PDF/X-1a for print, Acrobat 5 for general use), and click Save PDF.
Inkscape FREE
Open the .ai file, go to File > Save As, and choose Portable Document Format (*.pdf). Complex Illustrator effects such as gradient meshes may not transfer with full fidelity.

- The rename trick works because
.aifiles saved in Illustrator 9 or later embed a full PDF - rename from.aito.pdfand open in any PDF viewer. Check that the file starts with%PDFfirst. - Files saved without the Create PDF Compatible File option do not contain the embedded PDF and cannot be renamed.
- For print-critical work, export from Illustrator rather than Inkscape, which may not replicate all Illustrator effects exactly.
