Why convert AI to DXF?
DXF is the standard interchange format for CNC machines, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and CAD software. Designers often receive artwork in .ai format and need to pass vector paths to a machine operator or CAD engineer who works in DXF-based tools.
How to convert AI to DXF
Inkscape FREE
Open the .ai file, go to File > Save a Copy, and choose Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14). Select Flatten Beziers in the export options for maximum CNC compatibility.
Adobe Illustrator APP
Go to File > Export > Export As, choose AutoCAD Interchange File (.DXF), select the AutoCAD version (2004 or 2010), set units (mm or inches), and click OK.

About these formats
An AI file is an Adobe Illustrator Artwork document - a vector graphics file made by Adobe Illustrator. Most modern AI files are PDF-compatible, so you can open them in Adobe Acrobat…

- Bezier curves are approximated as polylines in DXF R14; precision CNC workflows may need arcs redrawn as proper arc entities in CAD software.
- DXF carries only vector paths and lines - fills, gradients, transparency, and Illustrator effects do not transfer. Run Object > Expand Appearance in Illustrator before exporting to get clean paths.
- Text does not convert reliably to DXF; convert text to outlines in Illustrator before exporting if your design includes lettering.
