What is the INDD file format?
Files with the .indd extension store professional projects of page layouts, created with the Adobe InDesign program. They hold all essential document data: page content, graphic design, information on formatting, styles, colour swatches, master pages, and information on related linked files.
The format is a proprietary binary database first introduced with InDesign 1.0 in 1999; its current binary structure has been in use since InDesign CS (2003). Because .indd files are not backward-compatible between major versions, projects that need to move to older releases are typically exported to the interchange format .idml first.
.indd files also have an untypical recovery property: in case of damage, it is often possible to repair them using third-party tools such as Stellar Repair for InDesign, which was created for the purpose of retrieving such files.
