What is the SVS file format?
.svs files are Aperio ScanScope Virtual Slide images - large multi-resolution whole slide images produced by Aperio (now Leica Biosystems) digital pathology scanners. The format is built on the TIFF container standard, extended as a multi-directory pyramid: the file stores the full-resolution scanned tissue alongside progressively downsampled levels, enabling efficient pan-and-zoom at any magnification without loading the entire gigapixel image into memory at once.
A typical .svs file from a 40x whole-slide scan ranges from 500 MB to over 5 GB. The full-resolution layer is stored as JPEG-compressed tiles (approximately 240×240 pixels), followed by pyramid downsamples, a thumbnail, a label image (photograph of the physical slide label), and a macro image. Metadata - scanner model, magnification, microns-per-pixel (MPP), stain type, and scan date - is embedded in the TIFF ImageDescription tag as an Aperio Image Library header string.
The format is proprietary and formally undocumented by Leica Biosystems, but the OpenSlide library provides open-source read access across Windows, Linux, and macOS. .svs files are widely used in computational pathology and AI/ML cancer research. Clinical deployments increasingly prefer DICOM WSI (Supplement 145) or OME-TIFF as open, interoperable alternatives.
