What is the CSD file format?
The .csd file is a binary machine embroidery design format created by Singer and Compucon for home embroidery systems sold under the Poem, Huskygram, and Singer EU brand names during the 1990s. Designs were digitized using Compucon/Singer Dream To Reality software and stitched out on compatible home embroidery machines.
Unlike raster images, a .csd file stores actual machine stitch data: a binary header followed by a sequence of records encoding relative X/Y needle movements, jump stitches, trim commands, and thread color-change markers. The machine reads these instructions directly to drive its needle in the correct path, producing the embroidered design. File sizes are typically small - a few kilobytes to a few hundred kilobytes, depending on stitch count and design complexity.
.csd is a proprietary, undocumented format with no public specification and no stable magic-byte signature; files are identified mainly by extension. It is related to other machine embroidery stitch formats such as .JEF, .HUS, .PES, and .DST, but is not directly interchangeable without conversion software.
