What is the SPA file format?
.spa is a FutureSplash Movie file - the playable animation exported by FutureSplash Animator 1.0, released on August 19, 1996 by FutureWave Software. It is the direct ancestor of the .swf format that became the foundation of the Macromedia and Adobe Flash ecosystem.
FutureSplash Animator was one of the first tools to bring scalable vector animations to the web. When a project was published, Animator produced a .spa movie file (playable by the FutureSplash Player browser plugin) alongside an editable .spl document. The .spa container stores a frame-based timeline of vector shapes, basic bitmap images and simple audio, all in a binary, little-endian, uncompressed layout - conceptually the predecessor of SWF's tag-and-timeline structure.
In December 1996, Macromedia acquired FutureWave and rebranded the software as Macromedia Flash 1.0 in early 1997. The .fla authoring format and the .swf playable format carried the lineage forward. The entire Flash family reached official end-of-life on December 31, 2020.
No browser or modern OS includes native support for .spa files. To attempt playback today, use the open-source Ruffle emulator, which targets early Flash-era content; full compatibility with pre-Flash .spa files is limited because the format predates the published SWF specification.
Note: the .spa extension is reused by several unrelated modern programs - context and file origin are essential for correct identification.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA genuine FutureSplash .spa is an obsolete animation and low risk on its own; there is no live runtime to exploit now that Flash is dead (which is also why it is hard to open). Beware sites promising magic "SPA player" or "SPA to MP4" downloads - these are commonly bundled adware/PUP; use the open-source Ruffle from ruffle.rs instead. If your .spa is actually a Steganos archive it is encrypted and harmless without the password; a Sigma/FlexiSIGN .spa is just app data.
