What is the POTX file format?
A .potx file is a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation template in the Office Open XML format. Like any .pptx-family file, it is a ZIP archive containing UTF-8 XML parts and embedded binary assets (images, media, fonts); the standard PK magic bytes (50 4B 03 04) appear at offset 0. The internal [Content_Types].xml declares the presentationml.template content type, and the ppt/ directory contains slideLayouts/ and slideMasters/ but no slides/slideN.xml entries - a template defines the visual structure but holds no slide content.
A .potx encodes the visual foundation for new presentations: theme colors and fonts, slide masters and layouts, placeholder positions, table styles, and any default design elements. When a user double-clicks a .potx, PowerPoint creates a new .pptx based on the template instead of opening it for editing. To modify the template itself, use File > Open or right-click > Open directly on the file.
.potx is macro-free; the macro-enabled equivalent is .potm. The legacy binary predecessor is .pot (Office 97-2003), identifiable by the OLE2 D0 CF 11 E0 magic bytes instead of PK. The format was introduced with Office 2007 and is governed by ECMA-376 / ISO/IEC 29500.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWPOTX files cannot contain macros (that is POTM). A plain .potx is a safe ZIP+XML container. As always, do not open files where the extension appears mismatched (e.g., a file named something.potx that is suspiciously large or requests enabling macros - it may have been renamed from .potm). Download templates only from reputable sources (Microsoft template gallery, established design sites) to avoid social-engineering tricks.
