What is the PPS file format?
The .pps file format is used by Microsoft PowerPoint, versions from 97 to 2003. This type of file stores a finished multimedia presentation composed of slides, which contain elements such as graphic images, animations, text, and audio and video files.
Internally, .pps uses the OLE2 Compound File Binary (CFBF) container - the same binary structure as legacy .ppt, .doc, and .xls files. The file shares the same 8-byte magic signature (D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1) as those formats; it is distinguished from a .ppt file only by its extension and an internal flag that tells PowerPoint to launch directly into full-screen slide-show mode.
Difference between .pps and .ppt formats
.pps files are nearly identical to .ppt files. A common misconception is that .pps prevents editing - it does not. Renaming the file from .pps to .ppt, or opening it in PowerPoint and using Save As, restores full edit access immediately. The only real difference is the launch behavior: .pps opens straight into presentation view, bypassing the editor.
Successor of .pps
The successor of .pps is the .ppsx format, which is based on XML (OOXML) and was introduced with PowerPoint 2007. Unlike the binary .pps, a .ppsx file is a ZIP archive of XML files and embedded media - more transparent and widely interoperable.
Security & safety
RISK: MEDIUMPPS is a legacy OLE2 binary format that CAN carry VBA macros (like old .ppt), so an unexpected .pps attachment deserves caution - especially since it auto-plays on open. Risk checklist: don't open .pps files from unknown senders; if Office shows a macro/Protected View warning, don't enable content unless you trust the source; auto-playing shows can also contain hyperlinks to phishing sites. The harmless forwarded "joke/inspirational" decks are common, but treat business-themed unsolicited .pps ("invoice", "photos") with suspicion.
