What is the NBA file format?
.nba files (Nero BackItUp Archive) store backup copies of user data. An .nba file is a compressed archive generated by Nero BackItUp that preserves the original directory structure of backed-up files. The main use of .nba files is saving data to optical discs (CDs or DVDs) or other external data storage devices, though generated archives can equally be stored in the cloud or on a local network.
One of Nero BackItUp's practical advantages is that it can dynamically fit the archive size to the target storage device's capacity, breaking the archive into smaller segments when the source data exceeds the medium's size limit. Incremental or differential backup segments use the .nda extension, while an .nbi index file acts as the catalog companion.
Internally, .nba archives use a standard ZIP structure (PKZIP-compatible) with DEFLATE compression, so renaming .nba to .zip allows extraction with any ZIP-compatible tool such as 7-Zip or WinRAR. Optional AES or ZIP 2.0 password encryption is supported for protecting sensitive backups, and the software also offers an option to automatically restore backup copies.
The broader Nero suite includes Nero Express (a popular disc burning program) and Nero RescueAgent (used for restoring corrupt data from damaged storage devices). Nero BackItUp 2026 is the current version and retains full backward compatibility with legacy .nba archives from older versions.
