What is the DXS file format?
.dxs files are saved game files for *Deus Ex* (2000), the first-person role-playing shooter developed by Ion Storm Austin and published by Eidos Interactive. The extension combines DX (the game's abbreviation) with S for save.
The format is built on the Unreal Engine 1 serialized package system, adapted specifically for Deus Ex. A save file captures the complete game state at the moment of saving: the current level, full inventory, health and energy values, active augmentations and their upgrade tiers, NPC states, and the positions of interactive world objects such as crates and doors.
Files are written to the game's Save subdirectory. Save compatibility between patch versions is not guaranteed; the final stable patch 1.112fm is the standard reference. The game is available as *Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition* on Steam (app ID 6910) and GOG.
The PlayStation 2 port (2002) uses console memory card saves incompatible with .dxs. Sequels - *Invisible War*, *Human Revolution*, and *Mankind Divided* - each use their own unrelated save formats and do not read .dxs files.
