What is the BIK file format?
.bik is a proprietary multimedia container file format. .bik files typically store video clips - the format was developed by RAD Game Tools as a dedicated multimedia format for full-motion video sequences in computer games. The result is a container called Bink, which uses the .bik extension along with its own audio and video codecs. .bik files are compressed and optimized for target software and hardware platforms. The Bink SDK has been licensed into thousands of game titles on PC and consoles; RAD Game Tools was acquired by Epic Games in 2021.
Bink codecs are optimized to offer the highest possible quality audio and video across handheld consoles, home consoles, and PC. Earlier Bink 1 releases supported resolutions up to HD (1080p); the successor .bk2 format (Bink Video 2) supports 4K video and is preferred for new game titles. Bink uses a proprietary hybrid DCT/wavelet video codec and a Bink/Miles audio codec supporting 44.1 kHz stereo with multiple audio tracks per file.
.bik files can be opened outside a given game environment with VLC media player, RAD Video Tools (the official Bink viewer and converter), or FFmpeg-based players such as mpv. For command-line conversion, ffmpeg handles .bik natively. A related older RAD format is the .smk Smacker video file.

RISK: LOWA .bik is a data/video file, not executable, and playing it in VLC or RAD Video Tools is safe. The practical risks are around tooling and source: avoid 'Bink codec pack' / 'free BIK player' download sites and bundled converters like Freemake - they are a common adware/PUP vector. Use VLC, official RAD Video Tools, or FFmpeg, all from their official sites. As with any media file, a maliciously crafted Bink could in theory target a decoder bug, but mainstream FFmpeg-based players are well-hardened; game-shipped .bik files are routine and safe.
