What is the AIR file format?
Files with the .air extension are Adobe AIR application installer packages - an environment created for Internet applications. Each file contains all resources and code dedicated to a given application, bundled into a single distributable archive.
Similarly to .exe and .dmg files, .air packages are used to install applications on a user's computer. The key difference is that .air files are more universal: the same package works across Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile platforms, while .exe and .dmg files are each limited to a single operating system.
Before being installed, .air files appear as compressed archives in ZIP format - they share the same PK magic bytes and can be inspected with tools like 7-Zip. The internal layout is more specific: a signed application descriptor (application.xml), a META-INF/AIR/ signature directory, and the application content - typically SWF files or HTML/JavaScript assets.
.airfiles are typically distributed via the Internet as download files.- The Adobe AIR runtime is required to install an
.airpackage. Since 2019, the runtime and SDK have been maintained by HARMAN (a Samsung company). - Each package carries a digital signature verified by the runtime before installation begins, ensuring the file has not been tampered with.

RISK: MEDIUMAn .air installer runs an application on your machine, so treat it like any software installer: only install AIR apps from the original developer/vendor, and prefer signed packages (AIR shows the publisher and whether the signature is valid). The package is a ZIP, so you can rename it to .zip and inspect it before installing. Get the runtime ONLY from the official HARMAN site (airsdk.harman.com) - third-party 'Adobe AIR' download portals are a common bundled-adware lure, and Adobe's own runtime is discontinued. A malicious .air can do whatever a normal app can once installed.
