Why convert AIR to APK?
An .air file is the desktop/mobile AIR installer package. Publishing the same app as an .apk lets users sideload it on Android or submit it to an app store without requiring the desktop AIR runtime. The HARMAN AIR SDK recompiles and repackages the project source for Android - the finished .air installer cannot be reversed into a working .apk.

- This is not a file conversion - the HARMAN SDK recompiles and repackages the project source for Android; the finished
.airinstaller cannot be reversed into a working.apk. - Use
-target apk-captive-runtimeto bundle the AIR runtime (larger file, no dependency) or-target apkfor a smaller build that requires runtime installation on the device. - The
.airpackage is a ZIP - you can rename it to.zipto inspect the internal SWF, assets, and application descriptor, but this does not produce a functional.apk.
Frequently asked questions
Can end users convert a `.air` file to `.apk` themselves?
.apk requires the original project source and the HARMAN AIR SDK - the finished .air installer cannot be reversed into a working Android package. What is the difference between `-target apk` and `-target apk-captive-runtime`?
-target apk produces a smaller .apk that requires the AIR runtime pre-installed on the device; -target apk-captive-runtime bundles the runtime inside the .apk so no separate installation is needed.
