What is the SDR file format?
.sdr is a vector diagram file created by SmartDraw, a diagramming application developed by SmartDraw, LLC. Despite sometimes being miscategorized, .sdr is not a bitmap - it stores vector shapes, connectors, and text labels that render at any resolution without quality loss. .sdr files typically store diagrams or design plans such as flowcharts, org charts, and floor plans. SmartDraw offers many predefined templates and examples, so users can easily create professional-grade presentations. The program also offers an import function that supports files generated by applications such as Microsoft Visio (.vsdx). Created diagrams can also be exported into formats used by Microsoft Office.
The .sdr extension is the classic SmartDraw legacy desktop format, which has been superseded by .sdrx in newer SmartDraw desktop releases. SmartDraw has since transitioned to a primarily web-based application that saves diagrams to the cloud.
The main advantage of SmartDraw is that it offers a broad selection of templates and example diagrams ready for visualization. Besides that, the program supports exporting to PDF for better compatibility with other applications, as well as to raster formats such as .png. This is especially useful when using cloud services for sharing .sdr files or exchanging diagrams with users who do not have SmartDraw installed.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .sdr SmartDraw diagram is passive document data with no executable code, so opening one in SmartDraw is safe. The main practical caution is identity confusion: the .sdr extension is reused by unrelated tools (EasyRecovery saved states, software-defined-radio recordings), so confirm a file is actually a SmartDraw drawing before trying to open it as one. As always, be wary of any file with a double extension (drawing.sdr.exe), which would be an executable in disguise.
