What is the RMS file format?
.rms is the DRM-protected variant of the standard RealMedia (.rm) streaming container, developed by RealNetworks. It shares the same .RMF binary structure and magic bytes (2E 52 4D 46) as a standard .rm file, with a RealNetworks proprietary DRM licensing layer applied on top.
The container stores interleaved RealVideo (RV10/RV20/RV30/RV40) and RealAudio streams using the big-endian RealMedia File Format (RMFF). The DRM wrapper requires licence server authorisation for playback, binding content to specific licences issued by RealNetworks.
RealNetworks used .rms files to protect paid streaming content during the late 1990s and early 2000s, when RealPlayer and RealMedia were dominant internet streaming technologies.
Practical playback limitations today:
- Files requiring live licence retrieval from RealNetworks servers cannot be played - the DRM infrastructure is largely defunct
- Files with embedded licences may still play in RealPlayer if the licence has not expired
- No open-source or third-party players support the RealNetworks DRM layer
The format has received no active development since RealNetworks shifted to standard .mp4/H.264 delivery and third-party DRM systems such as Widevine and PlayReady replaced the proprietary RealNetworks layer.

RISK: LOWRMS is a media container - no executable content. However, very old RealPlayer versions had known vulnerabilities; use an updated version.
