What is the PPP file format?
.ppp is the native publication format for Serif PagePlus, a Windows-only desktop-publishing application first released in 1991. A .ppp file is a complete multi-page layout document containing text frames, vector shapes, embedded or linked raster images, master pages, colour styles, and print-ready page geometry - the PagePlus equivalent of an .indd or .pub file.
The format is a proprietary Serif binary stored in little-endian byte order. File size scales with embedded image content: a text-heavy layout might stay under 1 MB, while an image-rich brochure can reach tens of megabytes. PagePlus supported both RGB and CMYK colour modes, making .ppp files suitable for commercial print workflows as well as on-screen layouts.
PagePlus was discontinued when Serif launched the Affinity suite. The final version, PagePlus X9, was released in November 2015, and the product line ended around 2017. Affinity Publisher cannot open .ppp files - there is no automatic migration path between the two applications. The only reliable way to open a .ppp is with PagePlus itself.
For long-term preservation, the recommended approach is to open the file in PagePlus and export to PDF, preserving the layout for viewing and printing. Re-creating the layout natively in Affinity Publisher is the route to a fully editable modern document. Related Serif file types include .ppx (PagePlus template) and .ppb (PagePlus book).
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .ppp is a passive document, not executable - low risk. The real risk is data loss: PagePlus is discontinued and may not install/run on current Windows, so files can become effectively unopenable. Export to PDF while you still have a working PagePlus. Avoid dubious 'PPP converter' websites promising direct conversion - most can't truly read PagePlus's proprietary format and some bundle adware.
