What is the P65 file format?
A .p65 file is a document file created with PageMaker 6.5, a desktop publishing application that lets users design leaflets, brochures, and posters. The .p65 file stores document layout data along with text, styles, and links to placed images. .p65 documents can be exported to PDF format directly from PageMaker. PageMaker also includes a library of templates for common publishing projects.
.p65 is the version-specific extension for PageMaker 6.5 publications; the same application also uses the generic .pmd extension, while .pt6 and .t65 serve as template variants.
PageMaker 6.5, and its final iteration PageMaker 7.0, are not supported on modern Windows systems - Adobe discontinued the product after the 7.0 release in 2001. .p65 documents can, however, be opened using Adobe InDesign, which succeeded PageMaker and includes a dedicated import path for PageMaker 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0 publications. .indd is the native format for InDesign projects.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWP65 is a passive 1990s document - it doesn't execute code, so opening one is not a malware vector. The real risks are practical: PageMaker is discontinued, so you may have nothing that opens the file except InDesign; the format is version-sensitive; and placed images/fonts are usually linked, so a .p65 received without its assets opens with missing images and substituted fonts. Avoid sketchy 'P65 viewer/converter' download sites (adware) - use InDesign, or ask for a PDF.
