What is the MPEG2 file format?
.mpeg2 is a multimedia container format developed and standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group (ISO/IEC 13818).
Files with the .mpeg2 extension contain audio and video data encoded using lossy compression algorithms. The compression is necessary to save a full movie in good quality on a DVD or Blu-ray storage disc. MPEG-2 compression algorithms are commonly used to encode movie clips because they tend to be comprised of many similar images (for example, a static background). Codecs used to create .mpeg2 files analyze all the frames and store them in a way that maximizes frame reuse, distinguishing between intra-coded I-frames, predicted P-frames and bi-directional B-frames.
Aside from multimedia content, .mpeg2 files are also commonly used for digital TV streaming - both satellite and broadcast or cable TV. The MPEG-2 standard is used by TV stations, TV receivers, DVD players and many other multimedia players. Two stream variants exist: Program Streams (typically .mpg or .mpeg) for storage media, and Transport Streams (.ts) for broadcast over unreliable channels.
Note that .mpeg2 is a non-standard extension; the same content typically appears as .mpeg, .m2v (video-only elementary stream), .vob (DVD Video Object), or .ts for broadcast transport streams.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWMPEG-2 is a passive compressed media container - no executable code, macros or scripts. Playing MPEG-2 files is safe in well-maintained players (VLC, MPC-HC). Theoretical risks exist in malformed streams triggering decoder bugs in old/unpatched media players, but this is not a current practical concern with modern software.
