What is the MIX file format?
A .mix file is a proprietary image document that can be created by either Microsoft PhotoDraw or Microsoft Picture It!, two consumer graphics programs Microsoft released around 1999 and later discontinued. The .mix format stores images in a combined structure that holds both raster (pixel) data and vector/object layers, letting users edit elements independently without permanently altering the base image. Unlike plain raster formats such as .BMP or .PNG, the layered nature of .mix preserves design intent beyond a flat pixel grid.
Internally, .mix files rely on Microsoft's OLE2 Compound File container - the same binary structure that underlies older .doc and .xls files. The format is entirely proprietary with no published specification. PhotoDraw was designed to pair with Microsoft Office, so images were commonly exported from .mix projects into Word or Publisher, though the .mix file itself cannot be embedded in Office documents. Because PhotoDraw and Picture It! were discontinued in the early 2000s, .mix is now a legacy format. XnView MP offers limited read support on Windows; for archival purposes, converting to an open format such as .TIFF is recommended.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA Microsoft .mix image is passive data, so viewing/converting one is safe. The real-world issues are obsolescence, not malware: the creating software is discontinued, so the file may be hard to open and editable layers can be lost on conversion - recover to PNG/JPG/TIFF promptly. Beware 'free MIX converter' sites that bundle adware; XnView from its official site is the safe choice. If the .mix actually came from a Command & Conquer game folder, it is a game archive (different format) - don't expect an image editor to read it.
