What is the M4V file format?
M4V files are related to the Apple iTunes application and the Apple TV app.
M4V files store video content from the iTunes Store, such as movies, TV episodes, and video clips. M4V files are structurally almost identical to MP4 files - both use the ISO Base Media File Format container - but carry the M4V brand in their ftyp atom to distinguish them as iTunes video. Alongside video data, M4V files store metadata describing the author, performer, copyright holder, genre, chapter marks, and cover art.
Most iTunes Store M4V files are protected with Apple FairPlay DRM, which limits playback to Apple-authorized applications and devices (Apple TV app, iTunes, QuickTime Player) linked to the purchaser's Apple ID. Opening a DRM-protected M4V file on a non-Apple device or in an unsupported player is not possible without removing the DRM, which may be legally restricted.
Unprotected M4V files - such as those encoded by the user - are essentially standard MP4 and can be opened by any MP4-compatible video player. If a player does not recognize the .m4v extension, renaming the file to .mp4 is usually sufficient. Bytes 0-3 are the ftyp box size (e.g. 00 00 00 18); bytes 4-7 are "ftyp"; bytes 8-11 are the major brand "M4V " (note the trailing space, 0x4D 0x34 0x56 0x20). This brand distinguishes iTunes video from "isom"/"mp42" (generic MP4) and "qt " (QuickTime .mov). DRM-protected M4V has additional DRM-related atoms (drms box) but the ftyp brand is the same.
