What is the IPD file format?
The .ipd file format is associated with BlackBerry (Research In Motion) and is used to store a backup created on a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry OS 4-7. The file is generated when the user chooses to back up their phone to a personal computer using BlackBerry Desktop Software.
The name comes from ‘Inter@ctive Pager’ - the original product category for early BlackBerry devices. Each .ipd file begins with the ASCII header Inter@ctive Pager Backup/Restore File, followed by binary database records. This file can be used to restore a backup in the case of device malfunction, loss, or data corruption. It stores contacts, SMS messages, email, calendar events, call logs, memos, tasks, and other BlackBerry OS app data. The .ipd format is mainly for backing up and restoring information and is not meant to be read directly by users, though third-party tools such as ABC BlackBerry Converter can extract its contents.
If a backup password was set in BlackBerry Desktop Software, the .ipd file is encrypted with AES-256; otherwise the data is unencrypted binary.
The .ipd format was superseded by .bbb (BlackBerry Link backup format) in February 2012. BlackBerry OS devices reached end-of-life on January 4, 2022, making .ipd files purely archival.

RISK: MEDIUMAn .ipd file contains private personal data (contacts, messages, email, calendar). It poses no execution risk - it is a binary data backup, not an executable. Primary concern is data privacy: .ipd files may contain years of personal communications. Beware of 'free .ipd viewer' downloads online - the format is niche and many 'viewer' sites are PUP or adware. Use established tools (ABC BlackBerry Converter, Elcomsoft Phone Breaker). If the backup was password-protected, AES-256 encryption protects the contents.
