What is the BBB file format?
The .bbb file format is used to store a BlackBerry phone backup copy. A .bbb file can store device data such as contacts, calendar entries, apps, messages, and media. The format was designed by Research In Motion (now BlackBerry Limited) and introduced in 2013 with BlackBerry Link for BlackBerry 10 devices, superseding the older .IPD backup format used by earlier BBOS devices.
Under the hood, a .bbb file is a ZIP archive - it carries the standard PK magic bytes (50 4B 03 04) and uses DEFLATE compression. Inside the ZIP wrapper, device data is stored in encrypted TAR streams. The encryption is AES-based, and the key is tied to the BlackBerry ID and device rather than a user-chosen password, so the payload cannot be read on a PC without device-based decryption or forensic tools. BlackBerry Link supported .bbb backups on both Windows and macOS, with a dedicated backup management utility.
A .bbb file enables the user to restore a phone to the state it was in when the backup was made. Restoring from a .bbb backup is essential in situations where important data has been lost due to device failure or breakdown.
The format is effectively obsolete: BlackBerry ended its smartphone OS support and BB10 services were shut down on January 4, 2022. No successor format exists for the BB10 platform.
