FLB File

Papyrus Format Library File
Ask a question
QUICK ANSWER

An FLB file is a Format Library file created by PAPYRUS, a bibliography and reference management program from the late 1980s. It stores citation output templates that tell PAPYRUS how to format references for specific academic journals. PAPYRUS is discontinued; the only tool that opens FLB files is the original PAPYRUS software.

What is the FLB file format?

An .flb file is a Format Library file used by PAPYRUS, a bibliography and reference management application developed by Research Software Design. It stores a library of output format templates that control how PAPYRUS renders citations and reference lists for different journals, publishers, or citation styles - analogous in purpose to the .csl files used by modern reference managers.

PAPYRUS targeted academic researchers who needed to format bibliographies for manuscript submission. Each .flb library could contain templates for dozens of different journals, letting writers switch citation styles without reformatting manually.

The internal format is proprietary binary and has never been publicly documented. No magic bytes or file specification are known outside the original software. PAPYRUS ran on DOS, early Windows, and classic Mac OS; active development appears to have ended in the mid-2000s.

The software has been superseded by open-source and commercial tools - Zotero, Mendeley, and EndNote - all of which use the BibTeX ecosystem and open Citation Style Language for style definitions. An .flb file encountered today can only be read by the original PAPYRUS application for which it was created; no converters to modern formats are publicly available.

Frequently asked questions

What program opens FLB files?
The original PAPYRUS bibliography software. However, PAPYRUS appears discontinued; if you need to migrate your data, export from PAPYRUS to a text/RIS format first, then import into Zotero or Mendeley.
Is FLB a FileMaker file?
FileMaker Pro also uses .flb for label layouts, but those are a completely different format from PAPYRUS Format Library files. Check which software created your file.
Can I convert FLB to another citation format?
Not directly - FLB stores the format templates, not your reference data. Your reference data is in other PAPYRUS files. Export references to RIS or BibTeX, then import into a modern tool.
