What is the XESC file format?
An .xesc file is a screen recording produced by Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture, a component of the Expression Encoder suite introduced around 2009. It stores compressed video of captured desktop activity and, optionally, a microphone audio track.
The format uses a proprietary Microsoft container optimized for screen content - not a standard format such as WMV or MP4. Decoding requires the Expression Encoder Screen Capture Codec, distributed with Expression Encoder 4. Without it, even Windows Media Player cannot open the file, making .xesc files inaccessible on systems where Expression Encoder was never installed.
Expression Encoder 4 SP2 (released November 2, 2011) was the final version. Microsoft discontinued the entire Expression Studio product line in 2012, with mainstream support ending October 2015. The software is still available for download but is unsupported on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Users with legacy .xesc recordings should convert them to .mp4 or .wmv for long-term accessibility while Expression Encoder 4 can still be installed. Current alternatives for screen recording include OBS Studio (free, open-source) and the Xbox Game Bar built into Windows 10/11.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWXESC is a video recording format, not executable. No known security issues. Main practical risk: the only software that can open it is a discontinued, potentially unpatched application (Expression Encoder 4) - install it in an isolated environment if concerned, then convert and uninstall.
