What is the WMV file format?
.wmv stands for Windows Media Video, a compressed video format developed by Microsoft Corporation for streaming applications online. The file format is built on the ASF container (Advanced Systems Format), which bundles video, audio, and metadata into a single binary file.
The .wmv format is useful for compressing video: it enables larger files to be converted into smaller-sized files and still protects the video quality within the file. This is useful in keeping the size of the file manageable without significantly affecting its picture quality. When a .wmv file is played back, the video data is decompressed on the fly by the player using the appropriate WMV codec.
The format supports a codec family spanning WMV 7 through WMV 9, with the final iteration - VC-1 - later ratified as SMPTE 421M in 2006. Audio inside a .wmv file is typically encoded as .wma (Windows Media Audio). Protected copies may carry Windows Media DRM or PlayReady encryption.

A .wmv is an ASF container; the file starts with the 16-byte ASF Header Object GUID 30 26 B2 75 8E 66 CF 11 A6 D9 00 AA 00 62 CE 6C. The same GUID also begins .asf and .wma files - the extension (and the codec/streams inside) distinguishes WMV (video) from WMA (audio-only) and generic ASF. So the magic identifies ASF, not WMV specifically.
