How to convert WMV to XVID
- Add your .WMV file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .XVID in a few seconds.
- Download your new .XVID file.
What to expect
- The video is re-encoded into the Xvid (MPEG-4 ASP) codec, usually in an AVI container, which is lossy and less efficient than modern codecs.
- Xvid in AVI is well supported by older players and hardware but not by modern browsers.
- WMV container metadata and DRM do not transfer.
Frequently asked questions
What quality does WMV to Xvid give?
Xvid is MPEG-4 Part 2 (ASP) video, typically in an AVI container, so the WMV is re-encoded into that older codec. It is lossy and less efficient than modern codecs, so it needs a higher bitrate to look as clean as the source.
Why convert WMV to Xvid?
Xvid/AVI is widely compatible with older media players and many standalone DVD and media-box devices, so it is useful when a target device predates newer codecs. The .xvid extension is informal and the file is functionally an AVI.
Where will an Xvid file play?
VLC opens it on Windows, macOS and Linux without extra codecs, and many legacy players and set-top boxes support Xvid in AVI. Modern web browsers generally will not play it directly.
What is lost converting to Xvid?
WMV metadata and any DRM are not carried over, and the video is re-encoded into MPEG-4 ASP rather than copied. The older codec is the practical ceiling on quality even at high bitrates.
