The file stores timeline arrangement, clip references, transitions, effects, and render settings as an XML-based text document - the actual media files (video, audio, images) are not embedded but referenced by file path.
Vegas Movie Studio was discontinued by MAGIX in 2021 after its Platinum 17 release, making .vf a legacy format. Its professional counterpart, MAGIX VEGAS Pro, continues to use the related .VEG format and retains the ability to open .vf files for backwards compatibility. If media paths have changed since a project was saved, VEGAS Pro will prompt to re-link the missing clips.
Since the file is XML-based, .vf files can be opened in a plain-text editor for inspection, though direct hand-editing is not practical. File sizes are typically small - between 10 KB and 500 KB - because the project stores metadata and path references only, not rendered video.
