What is the VEG file format?
VEG is a project file format associated with VEGAS Pro, a professional non-linear video editor originally developed by Sonic Foundry, then Sony, then MAGIX, and now by Boris FX. VEGAS Pro allows users to create and edit videos by adding audio and visual effects, transitions, and text overlays. VEG files store all project resources and settings - timeline tracks, edit decisions, and effect chains - and can be used to transfer settings between projects. The finished video is produced by rendering the project to a deliverable format such as MP4 or MOV.
VEG files can be exported to many popular video formats, while projects can also be saved to formats supported by competing tools.
VEGAS Pro is considered one of the most capable and approachable professional video editing applications, offering a wide array of plugins and editing tools plus broad support for formats used by professional audio-video devices. The application was developed by SONY until 2016, when it was acquired by MAGIX; Boris FX subsequently acquired it and continues to develop it actively.
A .veg project file does not embed the video footage itself - it only references source clips by file path, storing all edit decisions against those references. Moving a .veg without its media breaks all the links. VEGAS Pro is Windows-only, and older .veg files can be opened in newer versions, but the reverse is generally not supported.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .veg is a passive project file (edit decisions and media paths) with no executable code, so it is low risk to open. The practical caution is data loss, not malware: keep the .veg together with its source media, and rely on VEGAS auto-backups (.veg.bak / autosave) since a project saved in a newer VEGAS version may not reopen in an older one.

Technical details
deep spec| Format type | Proprietary binary non-linear editing project container; no public format specification or stable magic signature |
| Encoding | Binary, little-endian |
| Media storage | None - the file contains only edit decisions and references to external source media by file path; moving the project without its media breaks all links |
| Project contents | Timeline tracks, clip references with in/out points, transitions, audio and video effects chains, envelope automation curves, and render output settings |
| Typical file size | Tens of KB to a few MB; scales with project complexity, not source media duration |
| Auto-backup | VEGAS Pro writes a companion .veg.bak auto-save alongside the project file as a safeguard against data loss |
| Version compatibility | Forward-compatible - newer VEGAS Pro versions open older .veg files; opening a newer .veg in a significantly older version is generally not supported |
| Platform | Windows only; no macOS or Linux version of VEGAS Pro exists |
| MIME type | application/octet-stream (no specific registered MIME type) |
| Render output | Must be exported (rendered) to a deliverable video format - MP4, MOV, AVI, MXF, etc. - to produce a playable file |
| Ownership history | Sonic Foundry → Sony (2003) → MAGIX (2016) → Boris FX (2023) |
| Plugin support | Supports VST and VST3 audio plugins and OFX video effects plugins on the timeline |
| Related project formats | .vf (older Vegas project variant), .sfvp0 (Vegas auto-recovery file), .prproj (Adobe Premiere Pro equivalent) |
| File identification | No published stable magic signature; identified by extension and by successfully opening in VEGAS Pro |
