What is the STD file format?
.std is a template file format associated with Apache OpenOffice Draw, a vector graphics editing tool. Introduced with OpenOffice.org 1.0 and StarOffice 6 in 2002, it is the template counterpart of the .sxd drawing file: opening an .std creates a new untitled drawing pre-filled with the template's content, rather than opening the template for direct editing. A template file can contain settings such as color palette, workspace configuration, backgrounds, and predefined drawing styles.
Internally, .std is a ZIP archive containing UTF-8 XML files - primarily content.xml, styles.xml, meta.xml, and settings.xml - plus a Pictures/ folder for any embedded raster images. An uncompressed mimetype entry at the start of the archive identifies the package as application/vnd.sun.xml.draw.template, distinguishing it from a plain ZIP or a related .sxd drawing file.
OpenOffice
OpenOffice is an office productivity suite similar to Microsoft Office. Tools available with OpenOffice are compatible to some degree, and .std templates are backward-compatible with current versions. Since OpenOffice.org 2.0 (2005), the format has been superseded by the .otg OpenDocument Drawing Template; modern LibreOffice Draw and Apache OpenOffice Draw can still open .std files but save new templates as .otg. The OpenOffice suite supports many different image and template formats.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWAn STD is a plain ZIP+XML document with no executable code path of its own, so risk is low. Like other office documents it could in principle carry embedded Basic macros, and LibreOffice asks before running them - keep macro security at its default and only enable macros from trusted sources. Avoid sketchy "STD viewer" download sites; LibreOffice (free) is the correct tool.
