What is the PDS file format?
A .pds file contains a project script - a list of commands and parameters for the CyberLink PowerDirector video-editing tool. .pds files store information in an XML-based text format and hold all video project data. A .pds file can contain:
- References to video files
- References to audio files
- References to graphics files
- Menu settings
- Information about effects and transitions
A .pds file does not contain any video, audio, or graphics data, only references to such resources stored on disk. .pds files are commonly generated based on templates for multimedia slideshow projects. They serve as the basis for video projects, making them easy to share between editors who have access to the same source media. .pds is the native project format for projects created with CyberLink PowerDirector. If a project is to be exported to a video file, PowerDirector offers a Produce option - the user supplies parameters such as resolution, codec, or audio settings, then points to the folder where the output file should be saved.
PowerDirector offers many advanced video editing features and supports various video technologies, including 360° VR and 4K Ultra HD. The software is available for Windows and macOS. The tool can be used effectively by both professionals and amateurs, and is available in several editions aimed at different audiences, including a free version (PowerDirector Essential). A similar project-script approach is used by Adobe Premiere Pro's .prproj and Vegas Pro's .veg.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .pds is a small XML project file and is not executable, so it carries little direct risk. The main frustrations are non-security: projects only open in the matching (or newer) PowerDirector version, and clips appear as "missing" if the referenced source media was moved, renamed or deleted - keep the project and its source files together. Beware download sites offering a "PDS viewer/converter"; the real tool is CyberLink PowerDirector. There is no legitimate generic .pds opener.
